Helvetica dikembangkan oleh Max Miedinger dan Eduard Hoffmann di Haas Type Foundery di Switzerland. Haas mendesain sans-serif typeface baru yang bisa bersaing di pasar Swiss. Tujuan desain baru itu untuk membuat typeface natural yang sangat jelas,  tidak ada maksud intrinsik di bentuk itu, dan bisa digunakan untuk berbagai macam keperluan typeface.

Tahun 1960, nama typeface diubah dari Stempel menjadi Helvetica (diperoleh dari kata Confoederatio Helvetica, bahasa latin untuk Switzerland) agar dapat dipasarkan secara internasional. Pada awalnya harus disebut Helvetica, tapi diabaikan Eduard Hoffmann karena dia pikir nama itu tidak tepat setelah kata negara.

Sekilas hampir sama antara font Helvetica dan Arial, tapi kalau diperhatikan saksama terdapat perbedaan-perbedaan ini :
* Coretan Helvetica secara khas memotong secara horizontal dan secara vertikal. Sangat terlihat pada huruf t, r, f, dan C . Sedangkan Arial menggunakan coretan yang miring.
* Huruf G pada Helvetica tojokan kebawah, sedangkan pada Arial tidak.
* Bagian atas huruf r yang memiring berbeda.
*Nomer 1 di Helvetica mempunyai sudut kotak dibawah tonjokan bagian atas, sedangkan Arial berbentuk kurva.
* Bentuk Q di Helvetica mempunyai bentuk cross yang lurus, sedangkan di Arial bentuk cross-nya langsing tipis seperti kurva.
